MoodleFN

The MoodleFN Project was created to allow schools and organisations to pool resources and fund the development of Moodle plugins. About once a year, or when funds permit, a coder is hired to carry out the actual code development. We are currently seeking funding partners for our next round of development. For more information about becoming a funding partner, please send an email to fernandooliveira@knet.ca. The MoodleFN plug-ins are free and may be downloaded from this webpage or directly from the Moodle Modules and Plug-ins Repository. Forums are also open to all registered users. Colonialism, development and the e-Community

This course explores the relationships between colonialism, the growth of digital networks and applications, and community development. It re-frames problems like the ‘digital divide’ by illustrating how people and communities are taking ownership and control of solving them.

It recognizes that this work faces significant challenges. Historic and ongoing inequalities restrict the abilities of individuals and communities to effectively use digital technologies. However, people are also undertaking many projects of self-determination, including in the area of technology development. This course explores these initiatives, focusing on how they represent expressions of Indigenous resurgence and innovation in the emerging network society.

The course was initially developed in 2013-2014 as SOCI 2804, a for-credit course in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). It is part of the First Nations Innovation project, which is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The project is a partnership between UNB, Atlantic Canada's First Nations Help Desk, the First Nations Education Council in Quebec, and Keewaytinook Okimakanak K-Net Services in Ontario.

COO - First Nations eHealth Working Group

As mandated at the All Ontario Chiefs Conference (AOCC) by resolution 09/14, the First Nations eHealth Working Group (FNEWG) shall be a group comprised of First Nation health technicians and connectivity experts tasked with developing an integrated strategy for the implementation of eHealth and broadband connectivity for all First Nations in Ontario.

Polar Bear Habitat in Fort Severn

The community of Fort Severn First Nation is conducting a survey of the polar bear, its migration and habitat in their traditional territory. Local guides, youth and Elders are working with researchers to collect, analyse and share local cultural and traditional knowledge in order to better understand how the species is being affected by climate change. This project is funded in part by the Climate Change and Health Adaptation in Northern First Nations and Inuit Communities Program- 2010-2011.

Lands & Resources Planning

The Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs is partnering with KO to support local community workers with planning community events, video conference gatherings and training for communities to discuss and share their relationship with the land. First Nation experts will share examples of planning, mapping and recording stories regarding a lands and resources issues in order to plan ahead for discussions with government.

The Mnistry of Community Safety and Correctional Services is supporting the KO Community Safety Awareness & Training project through the Safer and Vital Communities Grant. All are welcome to join us in the workshops with youth and safety workers and officers to talk about how to make your community a safer place.

Protecting Our Mother - Walk to Toronto spring/summer 2008

On April 30, 2008, Crissy Swain along with fellow members of Grassy Narrows First Nation began the 1,850 km trek on foot from Kenora to Toronto in an attempt to bring attention to the continued destruction of Mother Earth, and in particular to draw attention to what is happening within the traditional territory of the Anishinaabek in Northern Ontario.

Early this fall, the 2nd Walk for Mother Earth has left from Asubpeeschoseewagong (Grassy Narrows First Nation), near Kenora. The youth-led walk will arrive in Ottawa in late October, stopping in communities across Ontario. This year’s walk seeks to raise dialogue around the inherent links between the destruction of Mother Earth and the ongoing destruction of Indigenous cultures. The walk will be stopping in communities across the province to talk about protecting and healing the earth, as well as healing communities and the relationships between them.

This meeting place will be a place to find out where the walkers are, how it's going, any requests they may have and also a place for you to send them your support and encouragement!

KOTM Excellence Conference

KOTM Excellence Conference (March 24-26, 2009): This conference offered an intensive 3 day “First Nations Telehealth 101” for First Nations Telemedicine stakeholders from across Canada. Participants learned about the story of KO Telemedicine and explored strategies and best practices that could be adapted to other projects across the country.

NICSN Research Consortium

The partners in the NICSN consortium (KO, KRG, and KTC) are proposing to establish a research consortium NICSN: RC to undertake an impact assessment of the NICSN infrastructure development and the associated services and other developments built on this platform. This consortium would work with a variety of supporting Advisory Groups and agencies to design and develop an integrated approach to the long-term impact research and would look to develop on-going partnerships and other forms of association with interested groups including universities, not-for-profit and other research bodies, governments and the private sector (and including appropriate international groups) with an interest in the effective use of broadband and information technologies for development by aboriginal and indigenous groups.

Science Fair

What is a Science Fair?

A typical science fair is a collection of experiments done by students. Each experiment clearly demonstrates the steps of the scientific method that the student followed to complete the experiment. Science fair projects are usually done on your own (in small groups). The science fair takes place on one day where all participants set up a booth to showcase what they have done.

Our science fair will be completed in class and showcased in a digital format. A digital format means once your project is completed, you will put your end product, along with pictures of your steps along the way, online and students can view each other's projects on a computer. You will have the opportunity to view a number of projects from both 6th grade teams.

Creating Culturally Appropriate Curriculum

Online Workshop - November 12, 2008. Do First Nations students need a culturally appropriate curriculum to achieve their educational goals? What is explicitly or implicitly left out of the mainstream curriculum that First Nations students need to learn? How does a culturally appropriate curriculum prepare First Nations for the challenges they will face as future leaders of their communities? How can communities lead the process to develop a curriculum that speaks to the needs of their students?

Breast Cancer Awareness Workshops

In 2007 and 2008, Keewaytinook Okimakanak, KORI and the Canadian Cancer Foundation (Ontario) hosted a series of workshops on Breast Cancer Awareness. During these workshops, speakers shared shared resources, links and suggestions about how to reduce the risk of breast cancer and check for early warning signs.

In an effort to reverse Anishinaabemowin decline, the Treaty #3 Chiefs directed the Education and language technicians within their territory to work with Lakehead University to develop a comprehensive and collaborative strategic plan for the revitalization and retention of the Anishinaabe language.
