How many First Nation students move out to attend high school?

Hi folks,

Here's a chart with some Ontario figures from the 2001 census data (yes, it's kinda old). According this chart, in 2001 almost 60% of First Nation students (at the primary and secondary level) lived in a First Nation community.

These numbers don’t account for the mass “migration” of students that happens every year when grade 8 students are forced to move out of their communities to attend high school in a town or city.

We know it’s a pretty big number, but how big is it? Has anyone come across any articles, news reports, etc. that propose an estimate? Anyone care to formulate their own estimate or share any thoughts?

Thanks,
Fernando

In 2007, I did my own research while developing the B.Ed. program and came up with the figure of 70% of Grade 1 children who did not complete Grade 12 and that of those who did complete Grade 12, most were reading at a Grade 8 level.
