Today, at a regular staff meeting, I made a Professional Learning Community presentation on Identity and De-colonization. My objective was to demonstrate the importance for K to 6 students to have a school program which reflected the realities of their community to make the connection between what they see and what they learn. I presented a simple model for a school system based on the WHAT (curriculum content), the HOW (pedagogy) and the WHO (instructor role models). The last part of the presentation showed a collection of potential topics which could be used as a basis for designing a culturally appropriate curriculum to achieve the same academic objectives as mainstream students. This material was collected from conversations with people in the communities over a ten-year period. This is a work in progress and comments would be appreciated.
