Do you find it difficult when using a textbook in your classroom?
It could be that your students need an organizer map of how to read the selection that you expect them to use.
Often times we expect that our students have the skills needed for independent learning when in actual fact they have not been given the appropriate skills. It is important before you give students this activity that you model first through Direct instruction how to use this with the entire class and then give them the organizer. Without the direct instruction and example by the teacher this will just be another handout.
Here is an activity to prepare your students for using a textbook. This activity can be used with any age group. And used at anytime, the more you use it the better your students will be at navigating a textbook selection.
Textbook Maps:
Teacher- chooses the selection of the textbook that they would like students to use on their own or in pairs. From this selection teacher creates an organizer of each section of text that the student will find on the page. Teacher draws text boxes and labels 1, 2, 3 of a pathway for students to follow. Xing out any areas that students can skip on the page.
For students who need more assistance teachers can label in the text boxes Example: 2 main ideas found in this paragraph. 1 main idea from this paragraph. 2 definitions found in this section.
This activity helps students focus the path that they must follow as they read a textbook, as well as finding main ideas of reading a selection, and summarizing what has been read.
