Hi everyone! My name is Cathy Naveau and I am the Education Director for the Mattagami First Nation. Mattagami has the only on-reserve school in the Wabun Tribal area, we currently teach JK to Grade 8, after that our students are bussed to Timmins High & Vocational School in Timmins for Grade 9 to Grade 12. Special note** (I have to take my hats off to these students who wake at 6 am and at 7 am they travel approximately 1 1/2 hours to attend high school and after their day is done they travel back arriving in Mattagami at 4.30 pm. Parents had decided that they no longer wanted their children boarding in Timmins but to come home on a daily basis.) We have approximately 22 students in JK to Grade 8 with 3 full time teachers and 4 TE's. The challenges I find with our school is the remoteness per se (this is a drive in community) but the connection to other first nation schools is miles and miles away, in saying that I am glad for this site! My teachers will be joining us on this website which I hope will give them some support and good ideas! chi-megweetch! |
