The James Bartleman Aboriginal and Youth Creative Writing Award is a great opportunity for our students.
All it takes is a little encouragement from the teachers to get our students involved. One of my former students Erik Fiddler was an award winner this past year. All he needed was the encouragement and this writing contest was the opportunity for him to build confidence. Writing contests allow students to see that being a writer can open all kinds of doors for them. You can write anywhere (even in an isolated community) and write something that matters, that might change lives.
If you are interested in getting your students involved in the contest this year
Here's the information:
Every year up to six Aboriginal students will receive this award for their creative writing talent. Creative pieces may include, but are not limited to short stories, poems, essays, plays, or songs and must be original work created by the student.
For each category, there will be an 'up to 12 years of age' and '13 to 18 years of age' recipient.
Each recipient will receive a certificate and a cash award of $2,500.
To be eligible for the award, you must:
- Be 18 years of age or under.
- Submit an original creative writing piece that has not in any part been copied from any source.
- Self identify as being Aboriginal.
- Be a student enrolled in a school in Ontario.
- Be a permanent resident of Ontario.
An independent selection committee reviews the submissions and selects award recipients.
You can submit nomination forms at any time. The deadline is May 31 of each year. If May 31 falls on a weekend or holiday, nominations will be accepted until 5 p.m. the next business day. All nominations received after the deadline date will be considered for the following year.
