Listening Ball can be used for any age.

When children are learning about listening and talking
you can have a ball or special decorated box.
Only the person with the ball or box is allowed to talk.
This gives the child holding the ball the confidence to speak.

Line at a time Story for grade 3 and up.

The teacher explains that the magic talking stick (I used a play microphone) means that a student is speaking.  The teacher begins with the magic stick and starts a story ex) One day a little girl was walking down the road.

The next person in the circle must add the next line to the story. (Teacher can guide student by what was the girl's name? Where was she going)

The next person continues to build on the last idea. (After 5 students teacher repeats what has happened so far) (Remind students about the parts of a story by saying do we have a problem yet in the story?)

**A shy student may have some difficulties they are allowed to pass the first time but encouraged to contribute on the second round of the story. (Every so often refresh the students on what has happened in their story)

**If a student contributes "The end" before the problem is solved ask students if they are content to end the story there or would they like to continue. (You can always start a new story if they choose to end the story early on.)

Six Silly Things for Junior/Intermediate students.

Teacher prepares a container with slips of blank paper.  Have students write a category on each slip of paper "types of...Ex)McDonald's food, chocolate bars, things that are advertised, family, animals.  Things found at...Ex) the Northern, in the bush, on the winter road,  in your bathroom.

(You can always make your own categories but it is fun to see what your students will come up with.)

Students sit in a circle and begin passing around the container when the teacher calls "stop" the person holding the box must open the container and pull out a slip of paper and name 6 things that fit into that category Ex.) Types of McDonald's food= french fries, big mac, sundae, hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken nuggets. This must be done before the container gets passed back to the person speaking. If the speaker does not say 6 things in time they are out.

Keep repeating until all slips of paper are gone.
