With Halloween almost here I thought I would look up some interesting facts about this creative holiday. I found that in my classroom the more interesting facts I shared with the students the more the students wanted to research on their own. Halloween is a great time to have students write short stories about superstitions, mystery stories, and ghost stories.
An interesting way to start a short story unit is to memorize a ghost story and take your students out for a campfire and share the story while you're enjoying some hotdogs and marshmellows. Try to get students to share other stories that they have heard.
For students who have a hard time starting a story brainstorm as a group some ideas for a story (the basic elements) and have them pick their favourite ideas to begin writing.
