Update on Assessment

Kwayaciiwin Education Resource Centre is working on developing a district-wide assessment framework and process for formative and summative assessments with the community partners in FNSSP.  Here is an update on the summative assessment component.

1.CTBS  (Canadian Test of Basic Skills)

As was done in Year 1 with excellent engagement from all the schools (thank you to everyone!), part of the assessment component in year 2 (2010 – 2011) will include administering the Canadian Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) throughout the district (mid-year again).

The CTBS will be conducted with students in Grades 1 to 8.  It will not be necessary to administer the tests in Immersion classrooms (unless schools choose to do this).

Dixie Robinson will be coordinating the ordering and administration of the CTBS tests again this year.  If schools need any test booklets ordered,  or if you have any questions on the CTBS testing, please contact Dixie at  drydendixie@yahoo.ca.

2. EQAO

Under the national funding guidelines for the FNSSP program,  INAC has indicated that it would like to see all schools participate in the assessment procedures used in their particular province.  For schools in the Sioux Lookout District, this would be the EQAO tests (Education Quality and Accountability Office for the province of Ontario) which include:

-end of Gr. 3 – literacy and numeracy

-end of Gr. 6 – literacy and numeracy

-Gr. 9 – Math

-Gr. 10 – Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.

Teachers can see the kind of work their students will do on the EQAO tests by looking at actual tests from previous years (on eqao.com).  EQAO uses constructed response questions that require writing answers for some items, and rubrics for describing levels of performance.

During year 2 of the FNSSP (2010 – 2011) Kwayaciiwin will be using the EQAO tests for instructional purposes only and will be supporting teachers to help their students prepare for the tests by working on last year’s EQAO test.  This is to make it a learning opportunity for teachers and students,  with everyone looking at the rubrics used to assess the work and see examples of work other students across the province have done.  The teachers will also have an opportunity to provide feedback to Kwayaciiwin on strategies that need to be put into place for students to be successful in writing the EQAO tests in the future.

We are putting a call out to Education Directors and Principals who would like to have their Gr. 4 and/or Gr. 7 teachers participate in this learning process this year (using the Gr. 3 and Gr. 6 EQAO literacy tests) with support from Kwayciiwin.  Doug Rogers, the Kwayaciiwin Student Learning Assessment and Performance Measures Lead, will be working with the teachers on this EQAO initiative.  If you would like to have your teachers and students participate in this EQAO learning opportunity, please call Doug at 1-866-326-1077 ext 30  or e-mail  him at drogers@kerc.ca.
