Hi, I also was invited by Brian to share some of the things that I am working on with the group.
Currently I am the Special Education teacher for KiHS (http://www.kihs.knet.ca). We set up the Special Education program two years ago and have continued to grow and improve over this short period of time. Special Education in an online school is a bit different than in face-to-face classrooms and presents different challenges, but it is just as necessary. I also teach Co-op, Health and Family Studies online for KiHS. I'd love to learn more about Special Education programs in all areas and levels of education, so I welcome any resources. I have been working with them over the last 6 years and I love it.
Another program that I work with is an online grade 5/6 and 7/8 program for the Yellow Turtle Youth Home (STAT unit) in Sioux Lookout. It consists of 10 weeks of lesson in Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Technology, Art, and Health. It allows youth to continue their education while there, and provides flexibility for both students and staff in when they complete lessons and the pace they complete them in. I also complete educational assessments at the beginning of the program to evaluate where youth are and what their needs will be.
I'm also doing my Doctorate in Distance Education right now because I hope to help continue to expand the opportunities and quality of education for Aboriginal youth. I love the opportunities that distance education has provided me and my students.
If anyone has any questions about this program or has resources to share, feel free to reply back or email me at angelabatsford@knet.ca
I look forward to sharing with all of you. Angela Batsford
