Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux was a guest facilitator at the District Education Directors' meeting held in Sioux Lookout in February, 2010. Dr. Esquimaux is a member of the Chippewa tribe of Georgina Island.
During the planning session with the Education Directors, Dr. Esquimaux put forward 4 questions for the discussion:
1. What is the value of education as a mechanism for the preservation of culture and community inspiration?
2. What does the research tell us?
3. What questions do we need to ask ourselves, our kids, our teachers?
4. Where do we see ourselves in 20 years?
In her words, 'education will ensure higher levels of social capital and "will" provide a culture of trust, participation, collective action, reciprocity and community health.'
