10002Goal and Objectives

The purpose of the training & healing program is to increase the effectiveness of the Community Mental Health Workers. Mental Health workers will receive an accredited course under the Human Services Worker Diploma through Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario. As a result, mental health workers will be better equiped to serve sexual abuse victims. In addition to the training, workers will committ to creating support teams in their communities made up of community leaders, elders and other service workers to support the victim and their families. The goal is to better serve sexual assault victims and increase community support for victims.

KEEWAYTINOOK OKIMAKANAK RESOLUTION

Ministry of the Attorney General Proposal: Accredited Sexual Abuse Training

WHEREAS

KO Health is developing a proposal submitted to the Ministry of the Attorney General to deliver an accredited Sexual Abuse Training in support of sexual abuse prevention.

WHEREAS

1. This training will be targeted to seven mental health workers who are employed within the KO Communities.

2. It will provide the mental health workers with the skills needed to prevent, recognize, and act responsibly to victims, family members, and offenders, and to support the prevention of sexual abuse within their communities.

3. It will increase their knowledge about the dynamics of victimization; increase sensitivity and comfort level in dealing with victims, family members, and offenders; increase their knowledge regarding roles of agencies and other systems that would be involved in sexual abuse cases; Prepare them to develop appropriate assessment, recovery, and safety plans that reduce risk and ensure that victims, families, and offenders receive the appropriate treatment.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT

The Chiefs of Keewaytinook Okimakanak support the proposal submitted by KO Health to deliver the accredited Sexual Abuse Training to the seven mental health workers through onsite training, videoconferencing, and e-platform.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT

the KO Health department with the support of the Chiefs pursue the proposal. Give success in the competition, KO Health will facilitate the training with the support of other KO departments to support sexual abuse prevention in the KO affiliated communities.

Designed for groups of 10 to 12 people for optimum learning experience.

Day One: Introductions & Prayers

General Knowledge

· Current statistics & research

· Facts and Myths about Child Sexual Abuse.

Understanding the Legislation

  • Understanding the law as it applies to First Nations
  • Legal implications
  • Expectations on the worker

The Abuse Process

· Understanding the child’s experience

· Patterns of abusers

· Strategies for prevention

(This session may run into Day Two)

Day Two: Understanding The Perpetrators

  • Who are they? Where do they come from?
  • Sexuality vs Abuse and Exploitation, what’s the difference?

Physical Symptoms And Behavioral Characteristics

Of Abused Children

· Recognizing the behaviors

· Interpreting the behaviour

· Intervention approaches

Assessing The Degree Of Damage To The Child

· This is a method of understanding how much healing will be necessary to assist the victim in successfully traveling the healing journey


Day Three: Responding To The Child

(Video: Free to be me)

· Taking the disclosure

· Providing supports to the child

· Practicing the disclosure interview

In this session we will practice interviews using video replay or using observers of role plays.

Day Four: Healing Strategies

· Counselling skills

· Individual approaches

· Family work

· Community strategies

Day Five: Understanding the Community And Family Context

· The String Exercise

· Family Systems and Family roles

  • Self and Group evaluation
  • Preparing a personal plan for practicing skills.

Wrap Up: The session will wrap up with a lunch

This will be an intensive five day workshop focused on helping the staff in the community understand the both the victims and children in a non-judgmental and supportive light.

There will be added emphasis on practice of skills and techniques.
