creating a logo
by Nira Persaud - Thursday, 19 February 2009, 10:15 PM

The Promotion & Outreach group brainstormed and came up with a streamlined logo that emphasizes the functionality of the product currently known as ODBS. There are four components of simple graphic logo arranged horizontally:

1-a computer (text underneath says click it)

2-a printer     (text underneath says print it)

3-a binder      (text underneath says bind it)

4-a book        (not sure what it will say)

Marta from Systems sat in on our session and volunteered to work on a mock-up of the logo. Take a look at a premature version of it and tell us what you think (enclosed in the attachment).

I think "it" is unnecessary and that we should keep the words all nouns or all verbs for simplicity. This is the logo, so any unnecessary words should be nixed.

"Click, print, read" is perhaps the easiest. It also follows a trend in advertising that uses 3 verbs as a tagline.

Also, when Michelle is back, I am sure she would like to have her graphical input in creating the logo as her background is visual communication/design.

Thanks for posting, this is a great start!

Hey!

I just have to say, I really dig this logo. Although Erica S. mentioned that the 'it' should be omitted, I love it. To get what I mean, try to listen to Daft Punk's 'Technologic.' I am right now.... while dancing in my chair...

What about maybe adding arrows between the three? Like you start with clicking> add some printing>book...

nice work! smile

The freaky Chucky doll from that video gives me nightmares. But I see what you mean.

In case you haven't all been inundated with this vid already you should check out Daft Hands:

This is really great guys. I like the name POD as it is and I love Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. My favourite YouTube video of it is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr2JneittqQ The robot voice makes me think of a very different pod from 2001, but it is probably too threatening for our project. I really like the compurter icon logo by Nira and Marta.

I think something beyond 3 words could be more of a "tagline". I think what you are describing, a greater detailed look at the process would be great for the cover of the pamphelet.

Logos are primarily visual for instant and easy recognition. They would be used for like, a letterhead, or on a business card. This could be the letters POD with just the words Click Print Read. Like TakingITGlobal's Inspire Inform Involve:
http://www.tigweb.org/

This could then be expanded graphically to include the icons above.
Example of Fisher Price's Play Laugh Grow:
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/fisher-price-play-laugh-grow/909253099/?icid=VIDURVENT11

A further expansion could include the more complex combo of image and text which includes what you're suggesting w/arrows and such, verbs expanded into instructions etc.

Hi Erica,

I agree with the three words concept (the Play, Laugh Grow commercial is now running in my head!).

Click, Print, Read! is simple and easy to remember. Providing further expansion of the meaning of each could occur as part of the pamphlet.

Thanks

Cath

I may have mislead you guys....this very crude version of the logo is my attempt to create a visual representation to start the discussion going. Marta has I believe, an OCAD background, and would produce something way better.

Sorry for the confusion.

I like your conceptualization of this process. This boils things down to four easy to understand steps. It's good that you show people getting a real live book at the end.

You spent so much time making your book squasher, you should really post a pic.

Hey Marta,

I love this banner, or logo. I think the hands welcome the viewer to envision using the services themselves... even the hands coming from outside of the circle emphasizes this almost DIY ethic.

Hey Marta, Great work!! Everyone seems to really like this idea for our logo and I agree. I raised my concerns in class regarding the size-ability of this logo, and I still believe those are pertinent. Further to that I also think we should consider the word 'bind' as in many contexts it carries with it negative connotations, and a possibility of confusion as it is not a regularly used term outside of the information profession.

bind (bīnd)

transitive verb bound, bind′·ing

  1. to tie together; make fast or tight, as with a rope or band
  2. to hold or restrain as if tied or tied down bound by convention
  3. to gird or encircle with a belt, girdle, etc.; wrap or fasten around
  4. to bandage: often with up
  5. to make stick together; make cohere
  6. to tighten the bowels of; constipate
  7. to strengthen, secure, or ornament the edges of by a band, as of tape
  8. to fasten together the printed pages of (a book) and enclose them within a protective cover
  9. to secure or make firm (a bargain, contract, etc.)
  10. to obligate by duty, love, etc.
  11. to compel, as by oath, legal restraint, or contract
  12. to make an apprentice of; indenture: often with out or over
  13. to unite or hold, as by a feeling of loyalty or love

So thats just something to consider.....

Lastly, are you still thinking of making this your banner for the web and then making a 'logo'? Or is this design going to be used for both?

Michelle

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I had lots of fun making this.

Celene, I agree with your comment about the hands. The more I look at the first circle, the more I like the hands sticking out. I am working on changing the logo to have that part be the same throughout.

Michelle, I get your point on the term bind. To me it seems so common, but hey, I'm a book-binder. I'm willing to take suggestions on terms that you think may work better. I can't seem to come up with anything myself ("fasten"?... "publish" seems to vague... glue?).

Make is my favorite so far.
Create also might work, construct, generate.....but they all seem too long....
