Digital Contents - Existing Resources
by Jesslyn Stoncius - Monday, 9 March 2009, 11:08 AM

With many thanks to Andrew for getting this started, I have uploaded the resources we presented to the class in a Moodle Database. It is available on the home page -if you are a facilitator I believe- under ODBS Portal Features (testing).

I changed the name of the database to "Digital Contents" very generally, but it is a start. This is a work-in-progress place where we can keep track of the diverse kinds of resources available on the internet for free. Currently, it is not intended to be the information that we would present to the end user. This is a working list. A direct link to the resource is included in each record in the database.

I have modified the fields that Andrew had created.

Title: (Title of the Resource)

Author: (Author of resource)

Link: (Direct link to the resource)

Format: (Format of file)

Source: (Where the resource came from, which portal)

Date Retrieved: (Date when the resource was accessed)

Found by: (Who found the resource)

Print: (Yes – this is a resource that can be printed; No- it is not a resource that can be printed in its current format)

I also changed the format of the fields to free text from a selection menu, because I think that it is a little early to propose controlled vocabularies for file types and resources. We are still exploring what is out there. I am not sure what this will mean for migrating the data to a more polished form. On the help forums I was able to find information about exporting it to .csv format.

Does anyone know if there is there a way to import sources?

An issue that came up is the difference between a RESOURCE and a PORTAL. A resource being a direct link to a document/object that can be viewed as “content”. A portal being a direct link to a collection of resources and content. Both are useful in their own contexts. Do we want to include both in this database? Right now we have a bit of both.

To import sources, to go "add entry", and at the very bottom, there's a link to upload a csv file.

Nothing wrong with identifying portals! The only thing is, a description of the kind of content that one can expect to find on there might be useful, including the kinds of format.

Hi Jesslyn,

Apparently the art books on this page are in the public domain:

Not sure if you've come across it already.

Take care,
