Just starting a thread for discussing design issues in lieu of the design meeting the systems team was not able to hold this week. I'm reading an interesting book called Information Architecture (it has a polar bear on it!) and learning some basic ways that we can organize the ODBS portal. It seems like a big feat! However, I know we are an awesome team capable of surprising ourselves!
Some things to contemplate/ discuss:
What categories do we need for the content (digital materials, functions) of the site? What labels will clearly and meaningfully describe the categories? How will users navigate through the site? What kind of search options do we need to include? How can we make the organization of materials easy to learn and navigate?
Brenda, Sally, you may have already worked on some of this stuff... Also, I've never designed a website before so my approach may be way off... let's discuss!
Re: Design Considerations for ODBS System

I am approaching the design of the user interface from user behaviour first. There are a few ways I imagine a user will navigate the portal. I find that it's a good way to address many of the other issues that you raised, Marta.
1. They don't know about the service, and wants to understand what its about.
2. They want to search for a book based on a need. Being able to browse by category may be useful (i.e. education would be sub-branched into self-help, technical manuals, early education, literacy, numeracy, history, etc.)
3. They want to search books for leisure. They should be able to search by reading level (grade levels), genre (horror, romance, history, biography, fairy tales, poetry), subject matter (First Nations, Canada, etc. Depends on the tag of the content)
4. They want to create their own book and has an idea. They should be able to work on it through the portal (work in progress, such as the Book Function in Moodle), or submit completed works for publishing. They should be able to obtain copyright under creative commons license, and determine its fair use.
These are some of the considerations so far... thoughts?

I've sent an interactive PDF for internal review by the Systems and Contents team, but i've also created an online gallery for other classmates to get a 'preview'. I think this gallery would be a great place to track the design iterations that this project comes up with for the ODBS, as well as documenting the rationale!
There are also two gallery functions on moodle it seems... a 'lightbox' gallery under Activity, and a 'gallery' under resources. I'm trying out the resources one... seems to link up to more of the other gallerys on moodle. Will explore the functionality.

Hi there,
I have recruited Jeff and Chad, both YICT workers, as usability consultants. I will see who else I can find.
David is going to work on finding some recruits within our school, FN representatives in Toronto, and others. We will also put together some standard email/letter that we can send out for the purpose of recruitment as well. =)
Just a quick update! We're really looking forward to holding a few feedback sessions with interested classmates within the next couple of weeks.
Loaded interface, but I thought it was interesting how there is the option to customize the look of the site. There are a number of options along the very top of the screen.
