Moodle Technical Problem: disappearing blocks!
by Margaret Lam - Saturday, 7 February 2009, 11:15 PM

I was trying to move some of the 'blocks' around on moodle. When I try to move something on the right column to the 'left', it disappears, both from the layout, and from the 'add' list. Any suggestions?

Specifically, I wanted to add a few blocks on the left column, and can't quite figure out how to do it. The designer in me can't help feeling icky even though I'm just testing some of the functionalities to understand them.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I've done it now, I couldn't help but experiment with the Admin block, and I've lost it. =|

Hi Systems,

So, since I made the Admin block disappear (I'm getting help with that), here's a link to the course settings:

You can still turn editing on from the top right corner, but this was the most important function that Systems Team Member might be looking for!

Hi Margaret,

Sorry for the late response. I wasn't aware that you were having this problem. Here's what's happening:

MoodleFN supports blocks in the centre position when a MoodleFN theme and format is used. Since the ODBS site isn't using any of these, any attempt to move blocks from one side to the other will still place the block in the centre position but the theme/format isn't set up to show it. Basically, it disappears. Lost blocks can be retrieved by doing the following:

1. Click on the "Settings" link in the Admin block and switch the course format to "Weekly Format"

2.  Scroll to the bottom and Save Changes

3. Turn editing on, locate your missing blocks in the centre section and move them to the side.

4. Return to the "Settings" screen and switch back to the Topics Format.

Hope to have this fixed during the next MoodleFN update. Alternatively, if you want to use centre blocks, you could switch to the MoodleFN format and theme.

Site looks good! Well done!

Fernando

Thank you Fernando! I was afraid of changing the format in case all the content got lost, and then my classmates would kill me... ;)

I have one additional question, what is the proper 'link' I should give to the random gallery option? I tried different URLs and the only one that worked links directly to the page, and as you can see, stretches the column width and distorts the layout. What link should I put into the gallery settings so that it shows only one image at a time?

(This is fun...)

I see you've replaced the Administration toolbar. Way to go!

Now maybe we can change the colours to something less pea soupy...

The Random Gallery block is made to work with a 3rd party application called "Gallery". The Meeting Place front page pulls images from the K-Net Gallery located here: http://www.media.knet.ca/gallery, for example.

Looks like you're trying to link this block to the "Lightbox Gallery". Won't work like that. If you're just showcasing the 3 pics that you have online, then you might as well just put them in an html block and get rid of the gallery altogether. Better still, you could set them up as thumbnails and link them to a html page with larger pics + descriptions. Let me know if you want try this out.

... this is not related to this project, but I'm currently updating the MoodleFN code, which involves testing all the customizations currently on the Meeting Place site.  I used a backup of your site for this purpose. It's not a "live site"... just meant to showcase some features (expanded forums + a couple of blocks) as a slightly different take on your current format.

If you see code in the top of the screen, it's because the bebugging function has been activated (again for testing purposes). All user and messages have been stripped.

here's a link:  http://meeting.knet.ca/moodle/course/view.php?id=154

Hi Fernando, thanks for letting us know about the test site, and answering the gallery query. I will use html for now.

If there are any features you are testing that you'd like me to give you respond on, I'd be happy to do so! There are many features on FNmoodle that I haven't had a chance to try out yet.
