Understanding Community Needs and Usage of Knet
by Margaret Lam - Monday, 26 January 2009, 11:18 AM

I wonder if we could start a discussion brainstorming or gathering anecdotes about the ways people use Knet. Specifically, what needs drive them to go on, what information are they look for, and how successful are they at finding it?

A larger inquiry is actually what percentage of the population in each community is using this service, and what/who facilitates their initial contact with knet and the services that are offered through it?

I think having answers to these questions will help us design an ODBS that reflects and engages the community at a level that is most relevant to them. I will pass these questions on to the community research group as well.

Important questions... but they could be a tall order for this class to answer. Maybe... think big, start small: Soon the community research team will get to meet some of the YICT workers online. A bit later they'll get to meet some staff at one or more of the First Nations libraries. These folks will be our primary sources of information about community needs. So it could be you're developing a system with a much smaller audience in mind. Thoughts??
