ODBS Policy Statement
by Jalal Fietz - Friday, 10 April 2009, 11:18 AM

Here is the policy statement that the content’s team has come up with. Feel free to comment. smile

The purpose of the On-Demand Book Service (ODBS) is to support the joy of reading in rural and geographically isolated Ontario First Nations communities within the context of learning, and the sharing knowledge and history.

The ODBS seeks to serve and support these communities by providing a portal to global material and resources that are relevant, useful and wanted by local community members. The goals are to provide access to free online content of social value via a web portal that is developed using the input of local community members, and to provide a forum for users to create and print their own content.

The ODBS will not focus solely on resources that can be printed, but can also facilitate access to strictly online resources like read-only books, educational and leisure games, employment information, audio/video collections, parenting guides, online periodicals, educational resources, and any other materials that community members need.

Hey Jalal,

Found it! I thought this was what you were talking about it class last week...

I like this a lot- I see a lot of resemblance to the mission statements, but in plainer terms. The only thing I might think of changing is the part about social value ("The goals are to provide access to free online content of social value via a web portal..."), because perhaps not all useful information could be put under this umbrella term- I often think that what might be deemed socially valuable will be understood differently from person to person.

Reading the last sentence of this entry also reminded me of an idea that I remember hearing about at some point in our class... Do you know if there will be a function on the ODBS portal for blogging or anything? I guess one that focuses on info related to materials, so that users can see and place themselves within the ODBS virtual community? Hmm, probably another systems question it seems...

Jalal could you elaborate on what you meant by social value, I think Celene makes a good point.

I think when I had read it, I had almost seen it as "of value to society"... which is a bit different than her interpretation.

(further proving the hypothesis that understanding is different from person to person - haha)

I like how you've added multimedia content. We may want to ask the class next year to considering changing the brand a bit as it is really focused on print materials only. I'll change the FAQ to reflect that and modify some of the Promo text on Moodle a bit.

Hi Jalal,

I know nothing about collection policies, so I'm just raising a point which I don't think has been addressed yet. =)

Do we want to develop a policy with regards to community created works as well? Assuming that users have the ability to create projects, with multiple participants, the option of making the content available in some way in a digital format, what are the concerns that First Nations users may have? Are there policies that we can put in place to encourage, or at least protect the work that has been created? I don't think we have the answer to it exactly, but if a live prototype were to exist, something will have to address the policy towards user-created works.

Margaret
