Existing Online Digital Resources
by Brian Beaton - Tuesday, 3 February 2009, 08:34 PM

Good evening ... I am hoping that this discussion thread might be used for everyone to share their thoughts about existing online libraries and resource material and how they are organized. There sure are a lot of online resources out there ...

It would also be great for everyone to share some of the online library resources that they know about. Maybe we can start a different discussion topic for each type of digital library resource. For example,

  • children books (ages 1 to 5)
  • children books (ages 6-12)
  • young people books (ages 13-18)
  • adult resources
  • etc

Then under each section people posting entries can state the suggested subject area for the reference material, if that is appropriate. For example, categories such as leisure, science, geography, etc.

Maybe this is too much like a school library but unless anyone has another suggestion [smiles] ...

Brian

I think this is something that the Digital Contents team can take up, I will bring it up at our next meeting. In the meantime, it would be helpful to have any contributions!

Hey Jesslyn and digital contents team,

Here's a video on media.knet.ca: http://media.knet.ca/node/5002

It has an interesting angle on self-publishing and elders. Just in case you find it useful.

I found this by accident on the web, I don't think it is on the big list already;

Indiginous Librarianship http://www.library.ubc.ca/xwi7xwa/fn_lib.htm

It is a webportal for Aboriginal content, not too dissimilar from what we are proposing to make. There is more academic stuff on it though, good for us, but maybe not that useful for the communities themselves. It is from the University of British Columbia and has a lot of Canadian Aboriginal content, though not too much on Anishnawbe culture. It also has lots of international Aboriginal stuff.

I was trying to figure out what that meant then I remembered!
The instructor who used to teach that course is no longer at Cambrian so I will have to find out who her replacement is and whether or not they do a similar exercise!

I've found a meeting place on moodle for an online conference held in November 2008, entitled "Creating Culturally Appropriate Curriculum with First Nations Schools". I hope you guys will find this useful. There are some very useful discussion on there, and even a proposal by Fernando (our speaker in class next week) for an online repository of Indigenous Knowledge. See link below.

Jesslyn / Margaret ... another possible online resource can be found at http://smart.knet.ca/smart2002/conference.html ... Some of the links might be broken but the ones for the workshops held in each of the communities will help everyone understand some of the identified needs and priorities of the community members who participated in these workshops. Ricardo's team actually lead these workshops and transferred the skills to K-Net team members so could facilitate similar workshops in subsequent years ... Enjoy ...

2) I've looked into material published for special needs students and it's pretty good, but not cheap. These books are called "high-low" or "hi-lo" readers which means high content, low reading level. These books keep the content and book appearance age appropriate, but the reading levels have been lowered to various grade levels. Both fiction and non fiction are available. The idea here is that students struggling with literacy do not need to be embarrassed by reading a "dumb kid's book". Ideally, the books themselves are not identified as such although unfortunately some of them have some kind of hi-lo label on the cover which sort of defeats the hi-lo purpose. Publishers of this type of material include Scholastic and Orca Books. (http://www.orcabook.com/) I realize we can't afford this material, so I'm posting this as a starting point for further research if communities express a need to help students develop literacy skills.

From Bill McIver

Part of the function of a digital library could be
to open eyes. I far less knowledgeable in this context, but
I recall the Popol Vuh, the Mayan creation story, as being the earliest
transcription of an oral tradition. Surely there are other analogs
that might be of interest in KO. A five minute jaunt lead me to
the following collections of "Native American" or "Native North American" (US terminology) literature, literature for children and youth (by indigenous authors), and publishing companies.

* Native North American Authors (this is using US terminology)

TIG is a canadian based online organization, designed to support networking between young people in Canada who are engaged in any social, political, cultural pursuits. They have an aboriginal portal which I didn't know about. Perhaps there is even a collaboration there? I know that Erica Sum has experience working with them.
