Marking Manager Speed
by Scott Christy - Tuesday, 22 October 2013, 06:11 PM

We love the Marking Manager block.  It perfectly addresses a problem we've had with efficiently finding late assignments.

One problem we're seeing is that the block seems to drastically increase the load time for course pages.  Is this common?  If so, is there any thing I can do to improve the performance?

Yes, it drastically slow down pages. I really improved load time when I turn everything off in the block with the exception of Requires Grading. However, it still makes the page load too slow to be acceptable. If you delete the block pages load quickly again. It's too bad because the block was pretty cool.

Marc, Scott,

We have this block running on a number of separate sites and haven't noticed any slow down in page loads. Which version of Moodle are you using? Are you using any other 3rd party plugins? Are you using MySQL? Any info would be appreciated.

Also, are you able to email me login details to a test course with this problem?

Thanks,
Fernando

I am using Moodle 2.4.2 and MySQL. I can Profile pages to locate what dominates load time and it consistently is this marking block. I have run multiple experiments. Whenever I delete the block page loads again go faster. If I leave all the settings on the block how they are when a teacher first adds the block it is drastically slow (like 13-20 sec). If I then have them uncheck everything except the Requires Grading it really improves but still is the biggest chunk of page loads. It looks like its just too many calls to the DB. Especially if it's looking for ungraded activities.

I did the performance profile on my courses and it's definitely the Marking Manager block that is contributing to the slow load times.

We're running Moodle 2.5.2 with MySQL.  As for the size of my courses I have anything from a small course with 17 students, to my largest course where I have 85 kids with 3 groups in the course.

It's too bad because this block was EXACTLY what we were looking for.

Do you see any errors when debugging is turned on? Do you experience the same delay on our demo site: http://moodlefn1.knet.ca/demo/m25/ ?

Perhaps you could try downloading the plugin directly from Github: https://github.com/fernandooliveira/moodle-block_marking_manager/tree/master

Unfortunately, not much I can do about this without seeing the problem first-hand. Feel free to email me login details to a test course.

With student privacy laws in our state and school district being so strict, I cannot give you access to log in to my class.  I wish I could, but I cannot.

Thanks anyway.  You DO have a great addition for Moodle if it would only run faster.

I understand. You may want to consider setting up a test site at some point to deal with issues like this.

Best of luck.

no errors in debugging. The problem is the more students you have in a class and the more assignments the longer it takes to do a database call. If you leave everything turned on (especially ungraded assignments which can easily be in the 1000's) then it will instantly be agonizingly slow. By turning everything off except Requires Grading I think I might be able to get by.
