Report on Community Broadband Standards from Keewatin Career Development Corporation

May 2, 2011 - The Keewatin Career Development Corporation (KCDC) in Saskatchewan released a report summarizing broadband information technology applications.

The report offers suggestions for bandwidth requirements, and includes a discussion of local ownership of broadband networks. Here is a news release announcing the report.

The report was funded by Health Canada - First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.

KCDC is also working on a plan and proposals to research and develop information technology assessments for the communities of northern Saskatchewan.

Government Funding Expands Broadband Network Services in 68 First Nation Communities

Press Release announcement that the Government of Canada is partnering with SaskTel and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) to enhance Internet services in 68 communities. It notes:

The project is part of SaskTel’s larger $300 million initiative to enhance their suite of services to rural customers throughout the province. Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada will invest $11.6 million over five years, with SaskTel contributing technical, planning and in-kind services. SaskTel anticipates construction to be completed in 2014.

Health Canada invests to connect 83 First Nations health centres and nursing stations

Health Canada will partner with SaskTel and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) to bring broadband connectivity to 83 First Nations health centres and nursing stations in Saskatchewan.

According to a government press release:

Heath Canada will invest $5.8 million over 5 years to supply First Nations communities with better internet access that will allow Saskatchewan First Nations to gradually add more community level e-Health services to their health care system. SaskTel will begin installing fibre cables in 83 First Nation health facilities this year with completion expected in 2014.
