Dollar sign issues

In Moodle 2 (not an issue in 1.9) dollar signs seem to cause Moodle to think an image is to be inserted. For example, if the lesson says "They earned $500," the saved lesson would show "They earned" followed by a small failed image icon.

Screen shot of editor and saved activity attached below.

Thanks, this dollar sign issue will become an issue soon, with an accounting course in the works.

Here's another example from another course:

Best guess is it has something to do with one of the Math filter plugins we use. It seems to be taking sections between two dollar signs and using the filter on them. I don't know much about this, but there must be some way we can use dollar signs without them being converted through the filter.

Hi Kevin,

This is probably caused by one of the math filters, since the dollar sign is used to open and close the math notations. Mind you, this is usually done with a double sign ($$).

I noticed that your site has a bunch of math filters enabled. Can you try turning each one off/on to see if the problem gets resolved?

This may also be a good time to select the filters that your courses actually need, since each additional filter will require more processing power, which might affect performance of the site overall.

Hi,

I shut off all the math-related filters and the issue persisted in the example I provided. The teacher also re-created the activity with the filter turned off (http://www.tetesaclaques.tv/les_zombies_videpisode2896) and the issue was still present. When you right click and choose "inspect element" it appears that it is using the Tex filter, even though that filter is shut off. I've turned Tex filter back on.

The TeX filter is being used in Moodle 1.9 without issue.

There was no perceptible load-time difference with filters shut off.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Probably a good time to update the KiHS2 site, at least to 2.5. From what i can tell, this problem does not show up in 2.5.

Unfortunately, the current server does not meet the minimum requirements so I need to move the site over to the new education server. I will contact you via email with more info.

Hi again,

Just finished updating the KiHS2 site to version 2.5. Looks like we won't have to move over the the new server until we upgrade to 2.3.

This seems to have resolved the problem.

Please let me know if you come across any issues.

Thanks Fernando,

It seems to be working fine. I enabled the TeX filter again (down the road our math teachers will need it) and everything still seems fine with those dollar signs.

The math filters, $ should be functional but is considered a reserved character as it is used in the filters as a function, along with the following symbols below.
To get them to display normal you would insert a backslash before it.
Such as \$5,000 or \%10
Then should properly display as $5,000 and %10
