Embedding Youtube Videos in Moodle 1.9x
by Fernando Oliveira - Monday, 23 April 2012, 12:24 PM

Kevin recently emailed me about embedding YouTube videos in Moodle 1.9x activities. Seems the media filter is not responding properly. I did a little experimenting and came up with these steps:
  1. Go to your video on YouTube site
  2. Click on "Share" button and tick off the "Long Link" box
  3. Copy link
  4. Go to your activity on your Moodle course
  5. In edit mode, add a space or text (doesn't matter what), highlight the space/text, create a link with the editor icon and paste the link.

This link will show as a video.

You can see these steps in action here: http://screencast.com/t/zNqkc5eq

Pls let me know if this doesn't work for you.

Thanks,
Fernando

Hi Fernando,

It seems in the last couple of weeks, the video embedding in 1.9 has stopped working. We've tried all the various methods:

1. pasting the URL directly in the editor
2. pasting the embed code into the html of the editor (the video shows in the editor when you exit html view, but then when you save, the video doesn't show)
3. linking to a piece of text

None of these work, whereas #2 worked well for a year or so up until recently.

Please help. (FYI videos that were embedded previously are fine, it's just new embeds that aren't working.)

Kevin

Correction of facts:
This seems to be primarily affecting the summary section at the top of each week.

Last message on this topic. The solution seems to be to use method two described above, but to select the option "Use old html code" under the embed features in Youtube. That particular option is available when using Firefox or IE, but not Chrome.
