Assigning System Roles

Hi,
I'm unable to assign system roles other than 'manager' and 'course creator' (such as 'student' and 'teacher'). I assigned myself the role of 'manager'. Under "define roles" there's a tab "allow role assignments" and 'manager' should have the ability to assign a wider range of roles.

(This is happening with our other admin logins also, not just mine.)

Are you referring to Moodle 2 or the KiHS production site?

Has anyone else experienced this issue with limited choices when assigning system roles? Fernando, we are still waiting to hear about this issue. As we'd like to try a few courses in Moodle 2 for the fall, we need to know we can assign all the different system roles. Please advise.

Hi Kevin,

Looks like role settings in Moodle 2 has a section that controls where each role can be assigned, as shown here: http://screencast.com/t/9D2TEwZHz. Please see if this addresses your issue.

Thanks, this fixed the problem!

I am thinking that for system roles, we would only need Student, Teacher, and Manager. Can you (or anyone) think of other roles we might need?

Hi Kevin,

Why would you need a Student system role? This would allow all students to access all courses. Is there a particular user-permission that you want everyone to have?

Hi,

I guess I just assumed we needed site-wide roles. I thought it governed certain privileges like changing profiles or accessing groups or something. I guess we don't need them? Same with teacher roles?

Will we be able to develop a front hallway like we currently have? It functions sort of like a course, right?

Depending on your setup, you might want to certain staff to have site-wide privileges, but this is usually not done for student roles. Maybe you're thinking of front-page roles?

Unfortunately, the Moodle roles-permissions stuff in Moodle 2.0 seem just as unwieldy as 1.9. mixed
