Zero Grade Showing for Unsubmitted Work
by Kevin Dempsey - Monday, 5 December 2011, 02:07 PM

Hi,

This is a current Moodle question. One of our courses is showing zeroes for all unsubmitted work. Normally (in all other courses), unsubmitted work shows as a hyphen " - " in the gradebook. The issue is that teacher can not "aggregate only non-empty grades" since these zeroes are not registering as empty. This means the teacher cannot generate averages of submitted work.

Fernando, the course in question is: http://www.education.knet.ca/kihs/kihs19/course/view.php?id=196

Its gradebook is: http://www.education.knet.ca/kihs/kihs19/grade/report/grader/index.php?id=196

Another couse where this is not an issue is: http://www.education.knet.ca/kihs/kihs19/course/view.php?id=191

Its gradebook is: http://www.education.knet.ca/kihs/kihs19/grade/report/grader/index.php?id=191

I've checked and rechecked the settings under gradebook and the course settings, but they are all set the same.

Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

I think this might have something to do with the Aggregation method. Notice that CHC2P is set to "Simple weighted mean of grades" whereas the Native Language course is set to "Sum of grades", as shown below. I don't think changing this setting mid-course will do any harm, but it's probably a good idea to back up the course before making the change. Please let me know if this fixes the problem.

Thanks Fernando,

Unfortunately this doesn't solve the problem. Many/most of our other courses are set to Weighted Mean or Simple Weighted Mean aggregation. I've switched this setting a few times to no avail. (It's fine to switch this setting mid-course, which is nice, since it lets the teacher have different interpretations of marks in order to determine report card grades.)

There's some setting somewhere that is making it view unsubmitted work as a "0". Apparently it was like this last year too, so a course reset did not solve it.

Very strange. It looks like some students have "-" and other have "0" for the same (unattempted) activity. Do you know if any of the current students took this same course last year? Are there other courses with this issue? Also, how was this course reset from one year to the next? Just searching for some clues. I'll keep looking around.

Hi Fernando,

Good eye, I never noticed the few assignments that were showing "-"... I count about 5 up until week 5. Looks like something has changed now, as week 5 on has hyphens now, whereas before it had zeroes. Did you make a change of some sort? Whatever the case, it seems more or less resolved (hope I'm not speaking too soon). Also, to answer your other question, I think this is the only course with this issue. I don't reset/restore/backup courses, Freda does, but to my knowledge they all get done the same way.

I don’t think it’s resolved yet. Actually, it’s even stranger than first thought. If it was just contained to all activities before week 5, then that would be a good clue. But, it looks like some students have “0” while others have “-” for the same assignment! Look at Damian B in column 4-1B, for example. Do you know if Freda uses the RESET function when re-starting courses or does she just remove all students and add new ones?

Hi,

She doesn't use reset function. She does a backup, but doesn't backup students or student work, which removes the students. She then restores the course once it's backed up. (I'm repeating what she told me, as I don't know much about the process. Hope that makes sense.)

Adding my tuppence in I have noted that all non-submitted work is receiving the comment of 'Moodle Assignment' and a zero grade. This has only started happening since the FN Grade Manager was installed. So, I can support the fact that this is happening.

Gary,

Are you referring to Moodle 1.9 or 2.1? Kevin is experiencing this problem in Moodle 1.9. On my end, I'm not able to reproduce this problem on either version. Can you provide more details?

Thanks,
Fernando

We are running 2.1.2+ on an Apache server with the latest PHP and MySQL. I don't do anything; it simply seems to be that when I go to the coursewrok using the Marking Manager any student with no work submitted has the words Moodle Assignment in the feedback area and a grade of zero out of x (where x is the maximum grade). It is caused seemedly by simply using the Manager rather than supplying any feedback due to the fact that I have this with a piece of work awaiting the ending time to occur and I do not recall adding any comments or anything to any student's work; yet there are the words and the zero grade!
