Mahoodle (ePortfolios)
by Fernando Oliveira - Tuesday, 18 May 2010, 09:10 AM

I’m a big fan of student portfolios.  The portfolio modules in the Moodle repository however, seem buggy or underdeveloped. After a little searching in the forums area, I came across “Mahoodle”, which integrates Moodle and an “ePortfolio” platform called Mahara (www.mahara.org). This looks very promising!  Students would need a short Mahara primer at the start of the course, but I think it would be well worth it.

Mahoodle is now installed on the BMM Test Course 1.

The install directions can be found here: http://wiki.mahara.org/@api/deki/files/196/=Mahoodle.pdf

I think that this would be a great alternative for using slideshows to create portfolios. There are a few classes at our school where portfolios are a big component on the course.

I'm excited to try it out (it wouldn't let me log on when I tried).

After taking a look at Mahoodle, all the "Facebook red flags" rose up in my mind [smiles]. There is lots of things that can be done with Mahoodle but it leaves me wondering about possible privacy and security issues, especially with young people.

One question that I thought about was ... what happens to the student's ePortfolio when they finish the course? If the student's Portfolio going to be continued to be provided outside the course, then everyone needs to come up a set of policies to clarify roles and responsibilities for the general use of this tool.

Thoughts?

Good point, Brian. In this context, the Mahara accounts are controlled on the Moodle side. It's set in such a way that users can only access Mahara via their Moodle account.

But I think this is something worth discussing in a larger context. What happens when students “graduate” from KiHS, NED and YICT? Or people who want to remove their account from myKnet.org, firstnation.ca, or other KO sites?  Currently, we do this on pre-request basis, but it might be worth considering some kind of “delete my account” button for all these sites.

As far as the NED Program goes, students are encouraged to keep using the site to stay connected with their peers (there’s a social space on the site for this purpose), but accounts that are dormant for more than a year are automatically deleted.
