MyKnet.org Online Survey
by Philipp Budka - Saturday, 30 June 2007, 11:37 AM

Hi MyKnet.org ethusiasts,

I am planning to create an online survey for MyKnet.org users (with the SurveyMonkey tool) and would like to discuss with you the questionnaire, I have set up so far. Any comments, feedback, and recommendations are much appreciated!

I am attaching a draft version of the questionnaire as Word doc - the text in red needs particular attention.

Thank you for your support and all the best,

Philipp

Philipp ... I find it interesting to see more and more online surveys asking the demographic questions at the end of the survey instead of at the first. I think this makes sense for a number of reasons:

  • The reason a person comes to a survey is to participate (and hopefully share their information) about the issue at hand. Therefore the first question needs to be engaging and deal with the issue at hand instead of asking personal questions about the respondent.
  • If a person takes the time to complete the survey then chances are they will also answer the personal questions at the end of the survey.

Re: plain language - Instead of "what are the main reasons"... it might be simpler to ask "why"... Why do you maintain a MyKnet homepage... why do you browse MyKnet...?

Should there be a question about the links between MyKnet and the Knet email accounts?

Cultural aspects and contexts some thoughts

This is a tough concept (I think) is there a way (or a need) to use plain language here?

Instead of cultural background is it not just as valid to talk about the users home, family and community??

Maybe something like Do the people in your community and home affect your MyKnet.org usage? Instead of Does your personal cultural background

+++++

Then there is the description of Aboriginal culture ...

I think I would add some more options here, for example:

* living my life as an Aboriginal person
* a forever changing and evolving description of the lives of Aboriginal people
* living in an Aboriginal community
* participating in traditional activities (hunting, fishing, family and community events, etc)

I think Brian makes a lot of sense here. The culture questions will have a lot more impact with a few concrete examples.

Hi Philipp.. you might consider placing the question of access (e.g., where is the computer) higher up. Its an easy one for respondents and could help warm them up for some of the harder questions... just a thought.

I think the media questions are important. Might be valuable to ask about video game usage (e.g., do you have an Xbox, Playstation, etc. and how often do you use it...?)

Hey Brian... what happened to those surveys that Ricardo and K-Net Services did (2001 to 2004?) in the KO communities? Is there some data there that might shed light on some of these questions? Is the data publicly available?

Adam ... Not too sure about the data. It use to be available online and there were some annual summaries produced from the data collected that I might be able to dig up (and I mean dig up). In any case, the summary document from the annual surveys conducted is available online at http://smart.knet.ca/evaluation

Thanks Brian. I took a quick glance at the summaries. For some reason I'm not able to download the full report. (The images for adobe, word, etc. aren't clickable...) Is this the full report that BW completed, or is it the series of case studies produced by Ricardo and his team with K-Net Services? Anyways, it looks like the appendix to the full report has more details on the community surveys...

Hey Philipp ... Just wondering if you might want to include a short introduction about yourself, your work and then point people to your personal web site, as a bit of an introduction to the survey?

As well, it might be useful to have a set of definitions for some of the concepts that you are researching (for example "social relevance").

Yes Brian, a short intro about me, and my work is planned. I would prefer to avoid definitions since I am not including the different section topics of the questionnaire to the final online survey. I thought they might be useful for structuring the questions and their subjects during the phase of their discussion.
