Hello everyone and welcome the discussion area for the 7Stones Project (www.7stones.knet.ca).
This particular forum is meant for discussions related to identifying potential funders for this project. I’d like to thank and welcome the small group of people who are “subscribed” to this forum: Brian Walmark and Franz Seibel from KORI, Alice Meyer and Maya Chacaby from the Centre for Aboriginal Initiatives, U of T, Brian Beaton from K-Net and Gordon Kakegamic from Oshki-Pimache-O-Win. Please feel free to invite others who you think might be interested in this work.

Over the next few weeks, I will be creating additional forums to discuss other aspects of the project (i.e. building a team, evaluating what’s been done so far, brainstorming about where to go and how to get there, etc). Your participation in these forums is also welcome.

Alice, who recently completed her Master's thesis on Anishinaabemowin language revitalization, has kindly offered to put together a funding proposal (thanks Alice!). There are a number of potential funders for this type of project, but at this point we need to focus on ONE application, which leads us our main question:

Where should we apply for funding?

Please feel free to offer up some suggestions/comments.

Migwetch,
Fernando

INAC just came out with the 2010/2011 Education Initiative Call for Proposals. Deadline is January 8, 2010. Would be great to submit a proposal to further promote and support MoodleFN along with applications such as the learning object repository (7Stones) or events like a MoodleMoot for First Nations. I envision all the Aboriginal post secondary institutes in Ontario using MoodleFN to connect learning groups and content with each other.

Gordon,

I took a quick look at the Educational Initiative guidelines package that you sent over (attached) and it looks very promising, particularly the section that calls for “ increased availability and use of culturally appropriate and relevant curricula”. I’ll do some closer reading when I have some time and post more comments.

Thanks for this!

Hi Fernando,

I have been thinking, researching and asking around about prospective funders.  Here's where I'm at right now, hoping to have even more ideas by Monday (I emailed my aunt in BC who has experience in this area):

1. Google Geo Challenge Grant - the deadline for this round has passed.

2. Inukshuk Fund - I'm not able to access their website from my computer - have you been able to?

3. Heritage Canada - my MA advisor suggested them, I'm looking into it

4. INAC - I am willing to try and meet that Jan.8th deadline Gordon is talking about.

Other avenues my advisor suggested were to go with the idea of "literacy"; she says there is a lot of funding floating around for this, I will look into it.

In terms of checking out sources, I was wondering approximately how much you are seeking in funding?

I will be in touch again next week.  Have a great weekend!

Miikwec,
Alice

Hi Alice,

The Inukshuk site seems to be back online now. At this point, I’m thinking the INAC program (4) is probably the way to go, however.

As for the actual dollar amount that we’ll be seeking, I’m hoping to talk this over with Brian Beaton sometime this week, since K-Net will be the official overseer for this project. In particular, I’m keen on figuring out ways of bringing people from the community level and grassroots orgs (like the Kwayaciiwin Education Resource Centre in Sioux Lookout) and others who might be able to contribute their knowledge or expertise.

Fernando

I agree. I submitted a proposal to Heritage Canada's ALI Innovation Fund this past summer to do Moodle native language packs and got turned down. INAC is the way to go.

Hi everybody,

I also think that we should explore some private foundations such as the Gordon Foundation... Here is the link: http://www.gordonfn.org/
