Good morning Philipp ... Yesterday I was working on a KNEWS story about the new canoe atlas that my brother-in-law completed is now getting published. On my homepage at http://brianbeaton.myknet.org I have been keeping track of the various wilderness canoe trips that I have taken with Tom. I realized I had not updated my page in some time so I ended up spending a couple of hours uploading pictures from our canoe trip from last summer and updating my page. It was fun to review some of the older photo albums and to recall these different trips over the years.

Myknet.org has given me the ability to upload content such as my art work, photos, link to the work that I've done working with K-Net over the past 6yrs. (http://calkenny.myknet.org)

I reside in Sioux Lookout with my family, but my siblings have lived in various places in Canada, and now the world. For us its about sharing our lives with each other, a form to keeping in touch with one another. We use the internet to do most of your communication, the telephone is too costly.

I use MyKnet.org primarily for communication. I have a friend who recently had a baby. I knew that the only place I had to look for updates was the family's MyKnet homepages. I was excited to be able to see the new baby photos, find out what they most needed as gifts and was pleased to read that mom and baby are healthy. There were many others visiting the site and offering their congratulations in the "shout box".

Hello there,

MyKnet.org is the ultimate communication tool in the north these days. How else can you keep friends and family updated about yourself and those around you?

After my daughter was born I couldn't wait to post pictures up and to write up a blog to introduce my little girl to the world. It didn't take long to get responses in the "shout box" which were very appreciated. My friends and family in Bearskin Lake were able to see the pictures and read my update soon after I clicked the "create website" button on the hp editor. My mother, who is computer illiterate was able to see her new granddaughter thanks to my brother who printed out the pictures from my site. It's amazing how such a tool can bring family and friends closer even if they're hundreds of miles apart.

My Knet.org is a great communication tool (replaces smoke signals, lol ) for the Sioux Lookout area as the majority of the northern reserves around us  are isolated. They are fly-in communities and phones, faxes, etc  are sometimes unreliable, but with the computer as a communication tool, is very useful, with their email service as well. I have seen the usefulness & potential of the MyKnet.org usage in Sioux Lookout & surrounding communities. It helps people, families, friends, communities  stay in close contact with each other. The users of this on-line sharing space find that they can provide news of themselves, families, their communities, the happenings in each of their reserves, provide information, entertainment & fun. I use MyKnet.org to share stories of myself growing up in residential school, high school and living the traditional lifestyle as well thereafter. And of course personal stuff about myself & family. I usually post up pictures of my home reserve (Bearskin Lake) and the town of Sioux Lookout where I presently live & work. I post pictures of hunters festivals, Christmas activities, hockey games, camping, hunting, jamborees, traveling, family, special interests, etc. I share my daily happenings, share ideas, motivations, jokes, to try to keep my home page exciting and fresh (which is usually a task in itself), and of course music. You can post music codes on my page. There are certain people from my home reserve that have homepages so I usually browse their pages to keep tabs on my community, like the recent elections they just had, I got a chance to vote as a result. My wife, daughter (14) and son (13) use KNet as well to basically post their daily logs, music, pictures, etc, so the youth are the main people using this space as the older folks are new to this, but the youth pick on it real quickly. It helps them keep in touch with their friends, keeps them busy and have fun chatting. But sometimes its used the wrong way too, like dissing others on there, making negative comments and gossiping about others, getting back at someone, but theres a process in place to report such inappropriate contents. But overall, parents monitor their kids activities and they can also report to Knet if there are homepages  theyre concerned about and Knet does  respond and take action to  them off the system and warn them of their contents & suspension. My family & I are happy with MyKnet.org and look forward to using it more. The only set back is theres a daily quota allotted to each page and I do get disabled now & them, from using too much band-width, but I still like it. Its great.

I've been with Myknet for about 4 years and it's been a great experience. Myknet provides me to upload pictures, graphics, music, html, almost anything!. Myknet is a place of communication and making friends. You can post anything into your homepage such as photos, music, graphics, slideshows, videos, and of course a cbox. I'm happy with Myknet.org and Knet.ca. Thanks for your time

Philipp ... Glad you are continuing this work and welcome back to Sioux Lookout. It is going to take a special effort to invite people to join us in this discussion forum. I am hoping that more MyKnet.org users will help us understand some of their ideas about how we might support the ongoing use of MyKnet.org

I am wondering if it is possible to share the article online that you, Adam and Brandi distributed at the CRACIN workshop last week. Can it be posted in this online meeting place?

Brian

Thanks for your hospitality! I am really looking forward to talk with people who are using/producing/maintaining their MyKnet pages but also with those who choose not to use MyKnet.org. To share that paper within this place is a great idea, Brian!

Best,

Philipp
