New Moodle site!
by Margaret Lam - Monday, 30 March 2009, 08:57 PM

Hi everyone,

Any thoughts on the new moodle site? I find it much cleaner and almost more fun to work in. Does it inspire any thoughts and idea in you? Please share. =)

And I have to say that Erica's FAQ looks FAB!

Thanks Margaret, it looks very classy! A great upgrade. It seems to have a lot of bells and whistles for us to take in.

The survey, event promo and FAQ do look great!

Well done Margaret and Fernando. The site is much cleaner and easier to navigate, as Jesslyn's already noted.

I wonder if there is a way to make it even easier to navigate... I must admit that I find it a little overwhelming, and I'd say I'm pretty familiar with the project! Do you think it would be worthwhile to have a very pared down visitors/splash page that would guide guests to information in a way that was less text based?

Margaret, et all ... Just moving through the site and finding it very easy to get around. The different features seem to work a lot faster for some reason.

Personally, I always like to see the SEARCH feature highlighted so I can use it to find what I might want to be looking for on the site. Is it limited to only searching the forums or can it be set to search the entire site? It sure worked nicely for my test of the feature.

I do like the layout - maybe I am getting use to these Meeting Place environments but I like the different boxes that provide people with different features to check out.

Good job ...

Brian

Hi Dominika and Brian,

Thanks for pointing out that there's a 'global search' box... I didn't even notice it!

It is pretty overwhelming at the moment, and I have plans to simplify the splash page, and move a lot of the information to 'sub sections'. How we will do that, I think is part of the archiving work that we have to do. Definitely not everything we've got on the front page right now needs to stay.

A more visual approach would be preferable, even if it's graphical treatment of text. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely take them into consideration when we get to the archiving phase!

Google is not the be-all and end-all, but I just got new of a new google development, and they have a very simple, clean, yet informative page. Take a look:

For some reason embedding that book binding video makes a big difference. As much as people love reading endless reams of text, adding multi-media is a big plus.

It fits into what Ricardo said about reading culture. Many people prefer to record info/learn via video.

BTW, did you know you can see Margaret in the background reading a magazine?

We have crammed an awful lot of content into one page. Usually once the content drops below the viewable area it's time to start making child pages. Does Moodle do tabs?

No but we can create individual html pages. The FAQ and a few other things on the front page are like that. That will probably be the most likely solution.

I believe those HTML pages can enables blocks as well...

Looks like ppl outside the class are liking the new site too, from the new wall comments.

I wasn't sure if Marta's photos were brought over from the old site so I added them to the "making books" subgallery.

Also, I was wondering if the links to the poster/pamphlet could be fixed? If not, I could upload them again.

Thanks for the upgrade, Margaret, see you all in class!
