Kick Off Event: IP video conference on Indigenous Community Radio
by Brian Walmark- - Friday, 4 April 2008, 02:23 PM

Hi Fernando,
I'm bringing in Franz, Verlin and Martine into this discussion... KORI is promoting discussion by Indigenous Peoples in the English-speaking world on the role communication plays in addressing local priorities on such things as control over natural resources and climate change though this meeting space...
We need to populate the Communications Platform with case studies and best practices... (Rick Garrick and I are working on that)
To promote discussion, I am making a list of people that I have met and presented with at various conferences and gatherings... (I'm working on that)
To draw attention to the Communications Platform, KORI will host three IP video (with streaming video) events... The first will focus on Community Radio, the Second will be on Newspapers and the third will be on on-line environments...
Community Radio will be first because I have identified some presenters from Wawatay Radio,  Metis Nation Radio and two African Graduate students from Guelph who have extensive experience with community radio back home... I am going to ask Michael Gurstein to help us identify someone in either Australia or New Zealand who has access to IP video who can talk about their experiences with community radio down there... I know some of the kids in Fort Severn were listening to broadcasts from a Indigenous radio station in Australia who called themselves either dangerous mob or angry mob but I can't find the url...
I like your idea of engaging some NAN youth at the community level who might want to participate as a way to voice their ideas in audio to share with other community radio stations up north...
I like the idea of having a separate platform for each communication tool (community radio, newspapers and web-based environments) but linked to the main Communications Platform....

We need to attract people to the Communications Platform... We need people to encourage people to participate and not just watch... We need to encourage young people to get involved ... For me the KI crisis, has clearly demonstrated the power of communication tools ... We have much to share with one another and much to learn as well...
If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to share them... Check out what what First Nations peoples are doing in Central and South America ... They are engaged in building a platform similar to ours... To see it, click here...

Hello all,

I went ahead and created a "shell" for the Indigenous Radio Meeting Place. Here's some suggested steps that might help us move this along.

1. Take stock: Look around to see what's out there (resources, publications, websites, best practices, blogs, radio stations, how-to videos, etc.). Might be a good idea to create a Wiki for this so that people can easily "throw things in the hat".

2. Brainstorm (you've already started doing this in your last message): Some obvious questions that come to mind: What do we want to get out of this event? What can we do to celebrate and support Indigenous radio? How do we involve Indigenous communities?

3. Planning the event: When is this happening? Who will participate? Who will moderate the event? How do we spread the word? ...and other such questions related to the planning details.

Comments welcome.

Hi Fernando,

Thanks for this... Would it be appropriate to an invitation to participate around to an elist of Indigenous People mostly in the Asia Pacific region...  If so could you or someone do up an brief set of instructions on how to register etc.etc.  Not sure who might be interested but there are several there with some on-going involvement in radio.

Best,

MG

I know Jesse Fiddler mentioned that there was a lot of interest in this type of development coming out of his trip to Bario in Malaysia last December.

I will make sure that Jesse knows about this discussion thread and hopefully he can bring everyone up-to-date on any developments.

Thanks for this Brian... I will contact Jesse about participating in this event... I would also like to discuss this with Frank Beardy... I understand that he and some other people in Muskrat Dam were instrumental in building one of the community radio stations north of Red Lake in the 1970s... Grand Chief Stan Beardy mentions the Muskat Dam radio station in some of his speeches about the early days of IT in the north...

Ok. I added some more elements to the Indigenous Radio site (as well as the Indigenous Peoples Communications for Development Platforms Network site... that's a mouthful smile). Please send along any suggestions or ideas. In general, I tried to focus on the idea that we'll be hosting an online event related Indigenous Radio and we're open to hearing from anyone who's interested.

Also wondering if we can do more than the regular video presentation format this time around? Here's some ideas.

1. Invite radio stations and individuals to create 5-15 minute podcasts that related to Indigenous Radio. Encourage people to include a mix of commentary and music. Steam them on the website and allow people to download them for use in their local projects or sites.

2. Collect stories and pictures related to Indigenous Radio

3. Create a radio applet with a list of Indigenous Radio stations. Allow users to play the radio online or download it for use in their own site (there's already a small demo working on the site)

4. Useful resources - Collect and bunch of "how-to" and "best practices" docs and videos for things like: how to build your own radio transmitter, how to create web radio and podcasts, possible funding sources for radio-related stuff...

4. Think about ways to decentralize the colleced material and live presentation. That is, allow all aspects of the site to be downloaded or streamed locally. Maybe even invite local radio stations to syndicate the live event.

Feel free to add some more ideas.

Fernando

Hi Fernando and all,

I've sent the info around to a couple of elists where there may be an interest...

BTW, are you in touch with AMARC http://www.amarc.org/. They are based in Montreal and interestingly grew out of community radio experience including in Northern Ontario aboriginal communities.
