Technology and education in Kahnawake

Kahnawake - Quebec

Wednesday, 11 June 2014, 10:30 AM

This video shows how teachers and other educational staff working in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake use technology. The video features interviews from people working in the community schools.

It was produced with the Kahnawake Education Centre (KEC) with funding from the First Nations Innovation Project. According to the KEC's website:

"The Kahnawake Education Center was established by the Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee in 1980 to administer all education programs on its behalf; administrative control of educational programs was assumed from the Department of Indian Affairs over the period of 1983 to 1988. It directly operated three community schools; Karonhianonhnha School, Kateri School and the Kahnawake Survival School, as well as provides services and tuition for students attending many elementary, secondary and post-secondary institutions outside of Kahnawake. The partnership of students, schools and parents is committed to the continued success, growth and improvement to Kahnawake's education system so that all of its people may have the opportunity to reach their learning potential, in the pride and understanding of who they are."

The video was created by Kameron LaHache, a young IT technician and digital media producer based in the community.
