Youth ICT 2012 - Project Videos on Community Technology Northern Ontario - Nunavut

KO-KNET's Cal Kenny and Angie Morris mentored a group of youth video producers from communities across northern Ontario.

After a 'boot camp' held in Thunder Bay, project participants brainstormed, scripted, filmed and edited videos.

Their videos explored different aspects of technology in their communities. Project participants reflected on this quote from the First Mile website:

"It is not enough for a community to simply be ‘connected’; a community must also be connected in ways that support sustainable, locally-driven projects. "

The project website describes some ideas for participating youth :

There has been an increasingly amount of negative news in mainstream society about our First Nation's people and communities. To help educate and share the positive stories of our communities we are initiating a Video Production project for you to facilitate and work with those within the school.

The mentors provided some ideas and questions for participants: Start thinking and planning for positive videos that help to describe what is happening with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in your community. Here are some questions to get you started:

• How is ICT being used in your community?
• What do you use the Internet for?
• What sort of benefits does ICT bring to your community.
• When was your first experience using ICT?
