Midwife

Midwives are trained health professionals who are recognized for their skill and knowledge of childbirth. They monitor and guide expectant mothers through pregnancy and help them to give birth in their homes or in hospitals with as little medical intervention (e.g. drugs) as possible. They also provide follow up and postnatal care.

The Cool Things They Do:
  • Monitor the health of mother and baby during pregnancy
  • Offer advice about pregnancy and childbirth options
  • Provide advice and support during labour
  • Guide the birth process
  • Examine and care for newborn infants
  • Meet with the mother and her family during the weeks following birth
  • Educate clients about breastfeeding, infant care, and newborn growth and development
Most Midwives Work In:
  • Privately-owned clinics
  • Homes
  • Hospitals
  • Clinics
  • Birthing centres
Personal Characteristics/Skills:
  • Caring, empathetic, and nurturing disposition
  • Ability to inspire confidence and put people at ease
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Decisive with sound judgement
Education and Training Required:

Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery

Length of Study/Training : 4 years post-secondary

Certification (s): Ontario: registration with the College of Midwives of Ontario

  • Family Studies
Employment Prospects - GOOD

The Province of Ontario recently passed legislation integrating midwives into the public health care system, which has boosted demand for midwives.

Earnings:

Average annual income: $40,000 to $70,000, depending on experience and location.
