Operating a First Nation Tourist Camp

Presenter: Chief Eli James

Chief Eli James of MacDowell Lake Outposts tells the story of developing and expanding the camp. MacDowell won the NONTA award for highest customer satisfaction (2005). The camp is a member of the Northern Ontario Native Tourism Association (NONTA) and uses a sophisticated booking and marketing system, which has attracted a high percentage of American customers. Come and ask Chief James about starting or expanding your tourism business.

Presenters: Darcy and Susan Kejick

Description: Darcy and Susan Kejick are the owners and operators of Darcy and Susan's Gas in North Spirit Lake First Nation. They have received awards from NADF for Youth Entrepreneur and Partnership (2005). Recently they received a business plan award regarding the expansion of their business to include a grocery store. The Kejicks will share the story of how the business was started, some tips for community entrepreneurs and the vision they have for the future of the business. Title: Northern Development Council (NDC) Priorities

Date: April 19, 2007 (10:30 - 11:30AM EST)

Description: Russel Wesley, NDC coordinator for the far North, will provide an overview of the role and activities of the NDC. The NDC is looking for input into their Growing and Strengthening Northern Business Plan. A number of themes have been identified, the NDC is looking for input regarding which are the priorities and what steps can the province take to support these priorites. Some of the themes include:

» support land use planning » expansion of training and education programs » continue to work with Aboriginal communities, entrepreneurs and partners to grow and strengthen Aboriginal enterprises
» Increase access and use of communication and information technology infrastructure and services

Investors will always require projected financial statements when considering an investment in your business, and financial statements showing your business' actual results once they have made an investment (to monitor your business' performance). This workshop will expand on the unique challenges of developing and running a home-based business through sharing of real-life experiences by a PARO business woman.

Maggie Holbik runs a home-based business, "Crystal Clear Coaching" and participates in PARO's Accelerator program, is a member of a PARO peer lending circle, and is a member of the Board of Directors. Her presentation will include practical information on how to work from home, i.e. time management strategies, goal setting, motivation, etc.

7 Attributes to Success - September 18, 2009

This workshop will provide you, as an entrepreneur and as a person, a structure to valuate yourself in 7 areas key to entrepreneurial and personal success. The workshop facilitator will be Colleen Martin, Loans Manager, Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund (NADF).  Colleen has a Bachelor of Commerce from Carleton University in Ottawa and has worked with First Nations and Aboriginal clients since beginning work at Nishnawbe Aski Nation in 1991. She has been with NADF since 2001 first as Senior Executive Assistant and then as the Loans Manager.

Cash Flow versus Income - September 25, 2009

Struggling with understanding the request from financial advisors for cash flow statements and income statements?  This workshop will help you understand the difference between these statements and the importance of each to your business planning and decision-making.The workshop facilitator will be Wendy McKay, Development Officer.  Wendy has been providing Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund clients with business development and bookkeeping assistance since 2003.  Wendy has taken training in various bookkeeping software and developed manual systems for the use of her smaller clients not familiar with computers.

Profit Margin and Pricing - October 2, 2009

This workshop reviews rationale related to product/service pricing and how price relates to the bottom line.  Pricing is a crucial component of business success.The workshop facilitator is Gail Anderson.  Gail attained certification as a Small Business Counselor through Confederation College and has been employed with Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund since 1997.

Personal Finances

Youth have a lot of financing options presented to them by today’s economy.  In particular, credit card companies are forever targeting young people to access additional credit.  This workshop will target youth, help them to make informed financial decisions and understand how financial choices today impact their future. Marlon Gasparotto, Business Support Officer, presents this workshop with common everyday examples that will allow youth to relate their personal experiences to the concepts presented.  By attending this workshop, youth will arm themselves with the knowledge needed to make wise financial decisions.

Entrepreneurial Mindset

This workshop will target youth; providing hard hitting realities of what entrepreneurship means in terms of time, commitment, money and power. Wally Bannon,Senior Development Officer, has more than 20 years in various aspects of economic and business development.  His experiences have provided him with a vast knowledge of what works and what doesn't work in the field.
