Making it happen...

by Fernando Oliveira.

Hello everybody,

Here's a quick update on recent developments about the Indigenous Radio event:

The event will take place on June 16. It's only 3 weeks away, but since it's an online event, this should give us enough time to stread the word and make it happen. There's a poster on the www.indigenousradio.net website that advertises this event and invites people to submit info about their community radio station in the form of a mini broadcast (mp3). The idea is to circulate this invitation to as many community radio stations as we can find on the web (so far I've found about 100.. still looking.. I'll post the list soon). I'm hoping to do a email blitz to these stations + all band offices in Canada in the next couple days.

Probably a good idea to hammer out any loose ends at this point. Brian W, would you mind post some info about the presenters? Any preference for start time? How does 2PM (central) sound? Does anyone know if the Starbak video codec works in Vista yet?

Comments/suggestions welcome.

Fernando

by Brian Beaton.

Good morning Fernando, Brian W. and Franz ... Maybe it is just me but I am wondering why we are setting up separate Meeting Places for this Community Radio event rather than just continuing to do this work within this "Indigenous Peoples Communications for Development Platforms Network" meeting space. My reasons for asking this ...

* seems to add another level of complexity to enroll into another meeting place;

* wondering how we migrate this "developing" discussion happening here over to the Community Radio meeting space

* for new users, I am not sure that anyone will have the patience to try and figure out how to get from one to the other and where to put what information.

My suggestion would be to just have different discussion threads within this existing meeting space that can accommodate these different themes. Keep it simple, is my message on this topic.

Brian

by Jesse Fiddler.
Hi Guys,

I like where this is going and we did talk about the importance of community radio and local communications at the eBario event. Like most telecommunications, the successful examples of community and indigenous radio are in the developed countries and areas like Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States.

In the lesser developed countries the main obstacles for implementing local radio are:
infrastructure - limited or no infrastructure like electricity, phones etc.
state control - a lot of countries have state control over communications and don't hand out licenses for community radio or indigenous radio
education - little or no education on what community radio can do and how to implement it

Bario did not have a local radio station and one of the suggestions at the end of the workshop was to help develop a local community radio station. Jim Remedia from CAAMA http://www.caama.com.au/caama/ in Australia came up with the idea and wanted to support it. His organization operates Australia's national indigenous radio network. He would be a good one to call and get involved in this conversation.

Another person is Teanau Tuiono from New Zealand. Teanau works with the Indigenous ICT Taskforce. At the workshop we talked about getting community radio stations online in various capacities. After the workshop Teanau did up a draft proposal for a project that highlights how we can help indigenous community radio stations in various capacities. He did mention some people working with community radio stations who would be interested in doing this project from Africa, and South America.

The ideas in the proposal attached is a lot like what Fernando is talking in his last post.

Brian already invited Teanau into this conversation and I will see if Jim Remedia would like to participate.

Jesse

by Brian Walmark.

Hi Fernando,
I'm bringing in Franz, Verlin and Martine into this discussion... KORI is promoting discussion by Indigenous Peoples in the English-speaking world on the role communication plays in addressing local priorities on such things as control over natural resources and climate change though this meeting space...
We need to populate the Communications Platform with case studies and best practices... (Rick Garrick and I are working on that)
To promote discussion, I am making a list of people that I have met and presented with at various conferences and gatherings... (I'm working on that)
To draw attention to the Communications Platform, KORI will host three IP video (with streaming video) events... The first will focus on Community Radio, the Second will be on Newspapers and the third will be on on-line environments...
Community Radio will be first because I have identified some presenters from Wawatay Radio, Metis Nation Radio and two African Graduate students from Guelph who have extensive experience with community radio back home... I am going to ask Michael Gurstein to help us identify someone in either Australia or New Zealand who has access to IP video who can talk about their experiences with community radio down there... I know some of the kids in Fort Severn were listening to broadcasts from a Indigenous radio station in Australia who called themselves either dangerous mob or angry mob but I can't find the url...
I like your idea of engaging some NAN youth at the community level who might want to participate as a way to voice their ideas in audio to share with other community radio stations up north...
I like the idea of having a separate platform for each communication tool (community radio, newspapers and web-based environments) but linked to the main Communications Platform....

We need to attract people to the Communications Platform... We need people to encourage people to participate and not just watch... We need to encourage young people to get involved ... For me the KI crisis, has clearly demonstrated the power of communication tools ... We have much to share with one another and much to learn as well...
If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to share them... Check out what what First Nations peoples are doing in Central and South America ... They are engaged in building a platform similar to ours... To see it, click here...
Brian
