A Victory!!! Abitibi-Bowater agreed to stop logging on Grassy Narrows! - A Message from Elder Willi Nolan | |
Greetings everyone! just got back to Kenora and Grassy late last nite..... we'd stopped in Red Rock for the Chiefs of Ontario (COO) AGM. we'd been invited to speak there. on our way back home (~half way back to Kenora) we heard THE news! Bamaa Pii/until later, S let's take some time to celebrate. P.S. here is one of the many emails and messages we have received: Hey, look at this great news! I just love big wins ....over the power elite and I'm taking a little time to quietly celebrate - and gloat - about this good news on the back porch with a nice hot drink, and then a walk in the forest to smile with the trees. The tide does seem to be turning in our favor - and as below, I'm feeling renewed energy. .......
AbitibiBowater--the largest paper company in the world--agreed today to stop logging on the traditional territory of the Grassy Narrows First Nation. RAN's Old Growth Campaign has been working with the people of Grassy Narrows since 2003 to pressure Weyerhaeuser Corp. and Boise Inc. to drop their logging contracts with AbitibiBowater for wood logged on Grassy Narrows traditional territory in the Whiskey Jack Forest. This epic victory was catalyzed by the concerted efforts of our amazing staff and a broad coalition of human rights, environmental and faith-based organizations, as well as the support, energy and passion of people just like you. This has been a grassroots campaign driven by women and youth in Grassy Narrows and supported by amazing volunteers, allies and families throughout the U.S. and Canada. -- Smiling at strangers since 1977 |
