1 Thanks, Kasabonika.

Kasabonika has a weekly radio show that highlights school activities and events.  Teachers from Simeon McKay Education Centre take truns preparing a local "School Hour" where they share information about school events.  These programs might include:

-interviews and performances by students

-information about coming events

-ideas for parents

-interviews of teachers new to the community

-information about fund-raising events

There is no limit to how this GREAT IDEA could be used!  (Is there a local television station in the community???)

2 Thanks, Slate Falls!

Bimaychikamah School in Slate Falls keeps a bulletin board in the Band Office.  This displays student work and lets students see their work on public display in the community.  It can communicate information about school events and activities.  Classes take turns changing the work that is on display.  This GREAT IDEA does not have to be limited to the Band Office:  how about the nursing station or the local store or the NAP detachment?

3 Thanks, Pikangikum!

Pikangikum youth are involved in a dance program at their school called "Outside Looking In". After months of dedicated practice of dance moves taught by a professional choreographer/dancer when she visits the community, youth participating in the program have the opportunity to perform in Toronto at the end of the school year.

Here's a video about youth who have participated in the program:

The Book Worm

-This is a school wide program.

-The Book Worm's head is mounted on the wall somewhere in the school.

-Each time a student reads a book he/she will receive a colourful worm segment to add to the worm.  On the segment students will fill out

Student's Name:     Title of Book:    Author's Name:  Comments:

-The student fills out the information and attatches their segment to the "Book Worm"

-The Book Worm can snake in and around classrooms, down halls, up and down doors.

-Classes could also compete for the most segments in the school community.

5 Thanks Weagamow!

"101 ways to Lead the Good Life."

Each class develops a poster with photos of each student and a speech balloon with the child's suggestion for "leading the good life".  These posters are then displayed throughout the school and the community.

6 Thanks Keewaywin!

In Keewaywin the community suggestions the Cultural Activities for the school.

They have taken students camping.  The school is devided into two groups.  The boys go out on one weekend Friday-Monday and the girls have a seperate trip the following weekend from Friday-Monday.

7 Thanks Poplar Hill!

Poplar Hill uses a school-wide character education program based on the 7 Grandfather Teachings.

8 Thanks Kasabonika

Teachers and E.A.s are asked to post a bright idea on a strategy or activity they have done in class.  The postings are collected and displayed on the Bright Idea Board once a month.

9 Thanks Deer Lake

In Deer Lake the Grade 7 students invite the local elders to an Elder's Tea.  They have sharing time together while having some tea and traditional snack/food.  Students prepare the whole activity (making invitations, preparing food and planning activities to do with the elders).

10 Thanks Pikangikum

In Pikangikum students hold a Talent Show where all talents can be displayed.  Students can perform as individuals or groups of students.  Whole classes can even create an act to participate in the activity.

11 Thanks Poplar Hill

In Poplar Hill the school participates in Fabulous Fridays (once a month or a few times per year) during an afternoon each teacher runs an activity and students sign up for the activity they would like to participate in.  Each teacher then has a mixed grouping of students.

12 Thanks Pelican Falls!

In each classroom at Pelican Falls High School there is a literacy centre filled with interesting reading material (magazines, pamphlets, comics, books) for students to pick up when they have completed the inclass assignments.  Each classroom picks reading material that can be connected to  the content of the course.  The tech class has a first aid manual along with some hunting magazines.  Anything to peak the interest of the students.

Awesome Job Pelican Falls!!

13 Thanks Cat Lake!

One of the programs being implemented in Cat Lake involves reading over the radio.  Teachers go to the radio station after school and read the books that they have sent home with the students.  Then students are able to follow along while they hear the books on the radio.

Wow What a Great Idea Cat Lake!

14 Thanks Pikangikum

At Eenchokay Birchstick School the whole school participates in the Summer Carnival.  At the end of the school year all the grades played different team games which the kids really enjoyed.  It was nice to get out of the classroom and enjoy the good weather.

Wow what a great Idea!

15 Thanks Mishkeegogamang!

At Missabay Community School they have started a Running Club.  The club takes a field trip to Thunder Bay to participate in the kids run.  The whole school works together to fundraise the money for students to go on this trip.

Great Idea Mishkeegogamang!
