After my trip to Deer Lake, I really started thinking about the goals of the ELDER Project and my role in the project. According to my supervisor Brian Beaton, the ELDER Project was started to as a way to support students and teachers in First Nations schools. With the KO-KNET team being big advocates of open source and Linux, Brian and Michael discussed how these two resources might best be introduced and provided to the school we serve. Thus Michael came up with the ELDER Project and developed it to where it is today. The work Michael's done so far is fantastic, but having said that, the reason I'm working on the ELDER Project now is because the schools are finding the Edubuntu and Qimo installation process too cumbersome to deal with, especially when you're trying to do this for every single computer in a school. We're trying to give teachers and students tools to learn and expand their horizons, but there's a problem when they can't even use it!

I have Edubuntu installed on my computer and there's no doubt in my mind about how simple, efficient, and dynamic it is to use. But the reality is that the vast majority of computers come preloaded with Windows, and the vast majority of users are used to using Windows as well. Educators need to focus on teaching their students, and the ELDER Project is there to facilitate the learning process through free open source programs. The last thing I want to do is confuse teachers and students alike by one new program after another, let alone an entirely different operating system.

That's why from this point on I want to really emphasize on promoting and documenting a key few open source educational software designed for Windows, especially those featured in the OpenEducationDisc. But don't worry! I'll still have Edubuntu, Qimo and many other programs available for anyone who wants them. It's just that, with only a month at most to work on this project, I want to focus on developing a few things and making them easily accessible with lots of support for whoever uses them. Perhaps in the future someone else will continue to work on the project and expand on my work.

Hello everyone! My name is Austin Lee and I'm a volunteer working at K-Net Services, located in Sioux Lookout. I was asked to carry on Michael Mak's work with the ELDER Project, and have been in contact with Michael over the last few days in order to determine how to move forward from where the project left off. I'm honoured to work on such an ambitious and noble project, and I'll do my best to ensure everyone has access to these educational resources. In the meanwhile, I'll be updating this page regularly so keep checking for more news!
