Wooden press Date/Time: Thu Mar 19 15:55:47 2009 The more messy hand bound/ wooden press process. (My bookbinding teacher would be shocked to see this dripping glue!). The pages have been clamped into the press, glue was applied over the edge and between the pages, and a narrow piece of tarlatan was glued to wrap around the spine/edge (tarlatan is startched cheesecloth or any thin, loose woven fabric can be used). The next step would be, after a minute or so, to remove the glued paper from the press, wrap the edge in wax paper so that it is not glue to the wood, and put it back into the press, with the edge inside the clamp, not sticking out slightly as is shown here.
Scoring tools Date/Time: Thu Mar 19 15:40:25 2009 The purple/gray thing is a scoring machine, which creates creases or folds in the cover (if you want the cover of your book to be one piece that wraps around the whole book). You can do the same things with a ruler and bone folder, which I hold in my hands.
Measuring the cover Date/Time: Thu Mar 19 15:41:12 2009 measuring the cover is like wrapping a present. Place the stack of paper down and flip it over to decide how long the cover piece needs to be (this is for a cover that wraps around the whole book)
Binding close-up Date/Time: Thu Mar 19 15:42:35 2009 This is a book I made on the wooden press. The cover pages are the same size as regular sheets of paper, with a narrow piece of paper wrapped around the glued edge (called the spine)
Fastback binding Date/Time: Thu Mar 19 15:35:46 2009 It worked out great in the end!

Paper Cutter Date/Time: Thu Mar 19 02:05:08 2009 Cutting paper is very exciting! I am holding the handle to the blade which I would pull towards myself to chop, the other handle (on the left side of the picture) is a clamp that keeps the paper in place, which I would also pull towards me.
